Alec Baldwin crashes Range Rover in The Hamptons: Inside the health struggles of the 'Rust' actor over the years

Send Push
Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin has once again found himself in a worrisome situation as he met with an accident after crashing his wife’s Range Rover into a tree in the Hamptons.

Baldwin, 67, was accompanied by his brother Stephen Baldwin at the time. The incident occurred on Montauk Highway during heavy rain, shortly after Baldwin had attended events for the Hamptons International Film Festival, where he is a co-chair of the festival’s executive board.

What happened in the Hamptons?

On October 13, Alec Baldwin and his brother Stephen Baldwin were driving along Montauk Highway in East Hampton, New York, when Baldwin crashed a white Range Rover into a tree. Although the vehicle suffered major frontal damage, both men emerged without serious injuries. Baldwin later posted a video on Instagram explaining the crash. He claimed a garbage truck cut him off, forcing him to swerve and strike the tree. He described the truck as being “the size of a whale” and apologized to his wife, saying, “I crushed my wife’s car … I feel bad about that.”

In the video, he reassured fans: “It’s all fine, I’m fine, my brother’s fine.” He also thanked the East Hampton Police Department, especially Officer Gerken, and expressed his intent to travel to California to be with his family.

Baldwin’s health and personal struggles over the years

This isn’t the first time Baldwin has found himself in the middle of an accidental situation. A few years ago, he met with another tragic incident on the set of his film, Rust.

Mental health toll after the “Rust” shooting

One of the most consequential events in Baldwin’s recent life was the 2021 on-set tragedy during the filming of Rust. During a rehearsal, a prop gun he held discharged accidentally, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza.

In the aftermath, Baldwin’s mental health reportedly took a severe hit. His wife, Hilaria Baldwin, revealed that he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following the incident. She discussed how he wrestled with deep guilt, questioning why he survived when she did not. In fact, in their reality series The Baldwins, the family opens up about their emotional episodes. At one point, Hilaria mentioned that Alec had stood at a breaking point, thinking, “If an accident had to have happened this day, why am I still here?”

Physical health, diet, and multiple scares

Beyond mental health, Baldwin’s physical health has also drawn a substantial amount of attention. In her memoir Manual Not Included, Hilaria recounts a frightening episode regarding Baldwin’s health issues. As per Hilaria, about a month before the criminal charges in the Rust case were dropped, Alec’s health “quickly deteriorated.” He was rushed to the hospital, his hands became cold, and he could barely walk. She feared she might lose him.

Alec has also been open about past weight changes. To prepare for his role in Blue Jasmine (2013), he followed a strict diet — cutting out sugar, pasta, potatoes — losing about 25 pounds.

What’s more? In more recent times, Hilaria admitted that she had masked one of his health challenges. She revealed that she once put a “fake boot” on his leg to hide a mobility issue after Rust, so the public would not scrutinize him.

Additionally, Baldwin has also publicly discussed struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Parenting a large family while managing OCD, he said, “constant attacks on the tidiest problem” became a breaking point.

While the Hamptons crash did not cause serious injuries to him or his brother, it highlights yet another hiccup in Baldwin’s ongoing train of misfortunes. However, despite the recent accident and ongoing health challenges, he remains active in his professional life. As for his personal life, perhaps this incident serves as a reminder: to slow down.

As Alec mentioned in a recent interview, when he reflected on how the Rust tragedy “negatively affected my health… it sucked a lot of the energy out of me,” this incident should remind him to care for himself, make peace with his own vulnerability, strive to rebuild his mental health after a traumatic incident, as he navigates the lanes of his occupational hazards and their consequences.
