Tesco has sent shockwaves through a major UK city after announcing they are to close one of their stores later this year. Home to 50 Tesco stores, Bristol has more branches of the chain than anywhere else in the UK apart from London.

However, one of their Bristol branches will close and it will happen before the year draws to a close. Tesco say they have made the "difficult decison" to pull down the shutters for good on the Bishopston Express store. Located on Gloucester Road, the store has been open seven days a week from 7am until 11pm, however locals will now want to make the most of it while it lasts as the branch will permanently close later this year.

Fortunately for staff, the supermarket giant plans to keep them on at neighbouring Tesco stores.

In a statement, the supermarket giant said all employees at Bishopston Express will be relocated to stores in the local area.

A Tesco spokesperson told Bristol24/7: "We have taken the difficult decision to close our Bishopston Express later this year.

"The store will be open as normal until then and we will continue to serve the local area through a number of other nearby stores.

"We intend to redeploy all colleagues to other local stores."

The property has already been put up to let with Burston Cook with rent quoted at £60,000 per annum. The building currently has Class E use, but the listing says it may suit other uses subject to landlord consent.

It's description on RightMove reads: "A triple fronted ground floor commercial unit available in a fantastic location on Prime pitch on the ever-popular Gloucester Road."

Other Tesco shops near Gloucester Road are on Cheltenham Road, Marlborough Street, Whiteladies Road and Golden Hill.

Despite the Tesco Express closing its doors shoppers in the area can easily walk to Co-Op, Sainsbury's and newly opened Waitrose on Gloucester Road.
