Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro's Frankstein landed on Netflix in recent days, with the adaptation of author Mary Shelley's 1818 classic horror novel receiving rave reviews from critics and viewers alike. For the gothic film, Oscar Isaac plays Victor Frankenstein, and Jacob Elordi portrays Frankenstein's monster.
The traditional tale follows the story of Victor's extreme science experiment, which goes horribly wrong, and the misunderstood monster he brings to life becomes desperate for revenge against his corrupt creator. Addressing being part of this haunting film, Elordi told Tudum: "This cast is incredible. These are all heavy hitters and people that I've watched my whole life. Working with them was amazing. We just ripped our chests open and showed each other everything that we have. It's like being in a candy shop. These actors are all my favourite sour worms."
Christoph Waltz, Charles Dance and Mia Goth are also important characters in the adaptation, which has a 95 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is being branded a "true masterpiece".
One reviewer said: "A true film, finally, that got my attention for the two hours and 29 minutes it was. A true masterpiece, all coming together into one, making you watch minute by minute. Give it a watch, I know I wasn't disappointed."
Another shared: "Visually stunning, sonically incredible, heartbreaking and heartwarming, with incredible performances by Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, this is another incredible macabre piece of cinema from Del Toro."
A third penned: "A truly captivating and gothically beautiful adaptation of a classic piece of literature. Best cinematic version of Frankenstein to date."
Meanwhile, a fan said Frankenstein is one of the "best books of all time", while someone else said of the film: "Simply great! Loved the movie! Masterpiece from Guillermo Del Toro! Oscar Isaac makes a great performance, and Jacob Elordi strikes and nails it as the creature.
"Visually stunning, deep dialogues, and great storytelling. I watched the two and a half hours nonstop. I believe this film and most of its actors are deserving of Academy Award nominations."
