Govardhan Asrani, best known for his role in the Hindi remake of Disney's The Lion King, has died aged 89 after a prolonged illness. His heartbreaking death came just a few hours after he shared a Diwali post to his fans on his social media accounts. The Indian actor, whose career has spanned over five decades, has starred in over 350 Hindi films, including his iconic role in the 1975 classic Sholay.
Speaking to the media, Asrani's manager, Babubhai Thiba, confirmed: "Asrani passed away today at 3PM at Arogya Nidhi Hospital, Juhu. He is survived by his wife, sister, and nephew." Although his cause of death has yet to be revealed, the actor reportedly succumbed to a prolonged health condition. After Asrani's nephew Ashok Asrani also confirmed his death, tributes flooded in from mourning fans who took to social media to honour the late star. One penned: "Thank you for making us laugh and cry. And showing us the reality that everything is momentary only."
A second echoed: "Very sad news, Govardhan Asrani, a precious star of Hindi cinema, has left us. His comedy and acting skills will always be remembered."
"Indian cinema will always be grateful for you. RIP," added another fan.
A fourth shared: "RIP Legend Asharani. Thank you for entertaining us, Asrani Ji. You will always be remembered."
As another described the late actor as "A legend who defined an era of Indian cinema. From comic brilliance to heartfelt performances, Govardhan Asrani ji gave us moments we'll cherish forever. His legacy will continue to inspire generations. Rest in peace, sir."
Asrani cemented his place in the film industry during the 1970s, marking the golden phase of his career as he became one of Bollywood's most sought-after character actors.

During the decade, he starred in celebrated films such as Mere Apne, Koshish, Bawarchi, Parichay, Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, Chhoti Si Baat, Rafoo Chakkar, and the iconic Sholay.
As well as taking up comedic roles, Asani showcased his dramatic range in films like Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar and Chala Murari Hero Banne, where he is also credited for his work behind the scenes as a director.
Throughout the recent years of his career, the late actor was also praised for bridging the generations of comedy in Bollywood by working with younger actors such as Mehmood, Rajesh Khanna, and Govinda.
According to sources via IndiaTVNews, Asrani's last rites were performed peacefully on Monday evening at the Shastri Nagar crematorium in Santacruz, in the presence of family and close friends.
