In a heartwarming story from northeastern China, a father has become a social media sensation after quitting his job and travelling 900 km to set up a food stall near his daughter’s university, ensuring she could enjoy meals that reminded her of home.
Li Bingdi, a second-year student at Jilin Normal University in Siping, Jilin province, had long complained about the campus canteen food, calling it unhygienic and missing the “taste of home,” according to Dahe News. Her father, Li senior, who worked at a barbecue restaurant in Tianjin, decided to act. He resigned from his job, travelled south, and honed his skills in fried rice and noodles before renting a small stall just outside his daughter’s campus.
According to a report from South China Morning Post, the food stall officially opened in mid-October. On its first day, Li senior sold only seven portions, earning less than the 70 yuan his daughter made tutoring a student that same day.
Social Media Sparks a Surge
Feeling for her father, Li shared his story on her school’s social media platform. She highlighted his focus on hygiene and his efforts to improve the stall. The post quickly went viral. By the next day, students, teachers, and nearby residents queued outside the stall, some even overordering to support the father-daughter venture.
A Bond Strengthened Through Food
Li revealed that since her mother passed away from leukaemia, she and her father have relied heavily on each other. When she was unsure which university city to choose, her father promised he would follow her anywhere — a promise he fulfilled.
“While many people praise a father’s love as being as stately as a mountain, for me, my father’s love is as warm as the sun,” Li said. “He does not seek huge profits; he only hopes to make a living and look after me.”
