A 20-year-old postgraduate student in Coimbatore was abducted and gang-raped by three men on Sunday night while she was sitting in a car with her boyfriend.
Police reported that a couple had parked their car at Brindhavan Nagar, behind Coimbatore airport, around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday when three men arrived on a moped. “They broke the windshield of the car and attacked the boyfriend with weapons. They threatened the woman and took her on their moped to a deserted spot a kilometer away, where they repeatedly raped her,” said a police officer.
The injured man immediately contacted the Peelamedu police, who began a search operation around 11 p.m. The woman was found around 4 a.m., but the attackers had already fled, leaving behind their stolen moped. “She has been admitted to a private hospital in the city,” the officer added.
Later on Monday night, police shot at and apprehended the three suspects — Sathish, Guna, and Karthik — all residents of Madurai district and daily wage workers living in a rented room in Coimbatore. They were taken to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for treatment. Police have not released further details about the arrests.
“The cameras failed to capture their faces due to the glare,” said a police source. The survivor, a student from Madurai studying in Coimbatore and staying in a hostel, is said to be in deep shock.
“She is in a state of shock and her friend’s health condition is stable. We have formed seven special teams to nab the culprits,” city police commissioner A. Saravana Sundar said. Officers also showed the survivor over 60 photographs of known criminals, but “she couldn’t recognize the attackers,” the official confirmed.
Meanwhile, the AIADMK women’s wing has called for a protest against the rape and rising cases of violence against women. BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan also visited the crime scene on Monday evening, accompanied by party members.
